PAGE LAYOUT

I was "today years old" when I learned about the professional break-up of Gotham's creators (Tobias Frere-Jones and Jonathan Hoefler) in 2014. I enjoy designing magazine layouts and haven't done one in a while, so I used an article published on Medium by Font of You for content to design this six-page spread. The call-outs were inspired by an image from Jonathan Hoefler's site showing his handwritten notes on Tobias Frere-Jones' initial mock-ups of Gotham. I used a cold, black-and-white color palette with stark blasts of red to highlight the betrayal scattered throughout the article. I updated the headline of the article to "Profound Treachery" as a nod to the language carefully chosen in Frere-Jones' official complaint against Hoefler.

I designed this recruitment view book about 10 years ago while working at the University of Central Missouri for The Harmon School of Business. If you squint your eyes and can get past the use of dated fonts and overused ribbon banners, you will see the story of a business school focused on future students, grounded in tradition. The previous look and feel of recruitment material was more conservative, which spoke more to the alumni than incoming freshman.

I came up with the concept and art directed the background photograph in the opening spread with motion blurred figures. The imagery and layout still honored the tradition of the school's namesake, but allowed potential students to imagine themselves walking the halls as well.
